Neuro Note #1
Since we are talking a lot about CVA/strokes right now in class, I thought I'd read this article called "Having a Stroke as a New Mom Changes Everything, but I'm Treating It Like a Gift". It also came with a very inspiring video as well. This story was about a woman named Katherine Wolf who had a brain stem stroke at the age of 26, right after she had birthed her first son 6 months earlier. She was in a coma for about 2 months after a 16 hour surgery. Yet, she survived! This whole story is truly miraculous. She spent about 3 years or so re-learning how to do normal everyday activities that used to come natural to her. All the while, she was raising a little boy (with the help of her husband and other family members of course). Her husband at the time was finishing up law school as well. Their life was definitely super busy already, and then this only created more obstacles for them. I can't imagine learning how to feed myself all over again especially with my own son learning to do the exact same task. So crazy to think about if you ask me! Luckily, Katherine had some great therapists who helped her recover within those 3 years. She relied on her faith to get her through sad and uncertain times. About seven years later after the stroke, they had a second son. Something in the story that stuck out to me was that when she gave birth to her second son, she could see through her window to the other hospital room she had been in years ago when she almost died. Pretty surreal to give life to someone while also looking at the place where death was upon you. That had to have been an odd feeling.
From there, their life took off as they began to get used to a new normal. They started a camp for other families with people who have disabilities. This was something they felt they wanted and needed to do. It was motivation for them in a way to know they were helping others who struggled like they once had. They also started a non-profit ministry called Hope Heals that was created to help others through faith. This story is truly amazing with how positive Katherine stayed throughout her whole journey and it's a testimony for others out there who may be dealing with the same things she once dealt with. Overall, this story was very inspiring and that's another reason I chose this for my Neuro Note because I could tell by the title this was going to be a great story. Lastly, something that stuck out to me from the video was something Katherine had stated about life in general. She said "Finding joy in the life you do have, not in the life you wish you had, is probably the beginning of any real wisdom in life". I think that quote is great, and could really make a difference for people who are recovering from stroke or learning how to have a "new normal".
