What is blissful ordinariness?
I think that blissful ordinariness is something that many people might take for granted. Our everyday routine may seem so simple and almost comes as second nature to us. For example, getting ready in the morning includes tasks like brushing your teeth, taking a shower, eating breakfast, and driving to work. All of these activities are so mundane and don't take much effort. But if something in your life were to happen to you that hinders these everyday routines, you may realize just how important it was to have that "blissful ordinariness".
This relates to the therapeutic relationship because it creates a conversation that the client must have with the Occupational Therapist. As OT practitioners, we are supposed to ask about their life, daily routine, and activities that really matter to the client. This will open up the floor for the client to explain how their injury/illness has altered their everyday routine. As OT's we understand the importance of having an ordinary everyday routine, and strive to help the client return to that. With that being said, a holistic approach has already been taken in this instance. The practitioner has created a therapeutic relationship by conversing about his client's daily activities with them and using the holistic approach to figure out what those things are. It all works together.
I think all of these things are so important within our field because they motivate clients to move forward and return to that "blissful ordinariness" that we all need.
